Obituary: Robert Charles Chaperon

Robert Charles Chaperon, age 82 years, died early Tuesday morning, July 19, 2016, at his Charles Street home with loving wife Cathy and family at his side.


Born in Plattsburgh, New York on March 23, 1934, he was the son of the late Antoine Edward and Grace (Tromblee) Chaperon. He graduated from Keeseville High School. On November 24, 1976, he was married to the former Catherine Shanahan who survives him.


Bob faithfully served his country in the United States Navy from 1954 until 1957 and then in the United States Air Force from 1958 to 1976. He was a veteran of the Viet Nam Era receiving both the Bronze Star and Purple Heart. He was honorably discharged on February 29, 1976. He was a member of the American Legion, Green Mountain Post #1 in St. Albans and the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Charles DaPrato Post # 778 in Swanton.


Following his discharge from the military, Bob worked for the Vermont Department of Corrections at the Northwest Correctional Facility and later for 20 years for the the Village of Swanton at the Waste Water Treatment Plant.


He was a faithful parishioner of Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary-St. Louis Parish and along with his wife Cathy ran the Swanton Community Food Shelf for several years.


In addition to his wife Cathy of 40 years, Bob leaves, his children, Rosemary MacDurmon and husband Mark of Enosburgh, Robert Chaperon Jr., of Swanton and Mary Clevenger and husband Roger of Colorado Springs, CO; a step-son, Sean Largey of Richford; a brother, Edward Chaperon and his wife Claudia of Omaha, NB; 19 grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren and nieces and nephews.


Besides his parents, Bob was predeceased by a sister, Jeanette Chaperon and a step-son, Patrick Largey, Jr.


Bobís family extends their deepest gratitude to granddaughters, Elizabeth Ann Sizen and Dianna Coleman for all the loving care that they gave to Bob during his illness.


The Liturgy of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday, July 23, 2016, at 11 a.m. from The Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, 65 Canada St., Swanton. Father Luke P. Austin will be the celebrant and homilist. The Rite of Committal with full military honors will follow at the Chaperon family lot in St. Maryís Roman Catholic Cemetery.


Friends may call at The Kidder Memorial Home, 89 Grand Ave., Swanton on Saturday morning from 9 to 10:30 a.m.


Gifts in Bobís memory may be made to St. Jude Childrenís Research Hospital, 262 Danny Thomas Place, Memphis, TN 38105-1942.
